In the world of show business, music and sometimes also professional sports – the term X-Factor is sometimes used to describe the special “star quality” that some people have and that sets them apart from other people in their respective fields. Although the phrase is often used, X-Factor can be hard to define and is composed of several intangible qualities.
There is another type of factor though that is easier to define, R-Factor. Also called R-value, this refers to the thermal resistance of various insulation and other materials. In simple terms, this means how well or poorly the material reduces heat flow. A higher number indicates higher thermal resistance, and therefore, less transfer of heat from one side of the material layer to the other.
This R-factor, or value, is important when it comes to assessing the energy efficiency of a building. High R values mean that less heat will be lost in the winter and less will seep into the building in the summer, with the corresponding positive effect on heating and cooling bills.
Some types of glass used in home windows or commercial applications are coated in such a way that they carry a relatively high R-Factor rating, as mentioned in this video clip.
