How to Beef up the Security on Your Patio Glass Doors

The first step in increasing the security of patio glass doors is to install a “charley bar.”
This will prevent thieves from gaining entry by sliding the doors across their tracks. It’s recommended to choose a bar that can withstand a force of 1,000 pounds per square inch, and one that’s visible – to act as a deterrent.
You can further beef up the security of glass doors by ensuring strong glass is used. There are three main types of glass: tempered (toughened), laminated and wired.
Tempered Glass
- This is 4-5 times more difficult to break than regular glass doors. Another major advantage of tempered glass is that, once it has been toughened, it can’t be cut.
Laminate Glass
- Basically, these are panes arranged in alternate layers with plastic panes to make the glass a lot harder. The main advantage of laminate glass is that it is virtually impossible to penetrate – even when it’s broken.
Wired Glass
- This is made with 2 layers of glass with wire mesh welded in between. While it’s not more difficult to break, it does hold glass fragments together when broken.
All the above types of glass can improve the security of patio glass doors dramatically. Even though you can expect to pay double the price of standard glass, it’s certainly a worthwhile investment to protect your family and possessions.
