Looking at the Different Material Choices for Gutters

Unless your roof has long overhangs and your property is steeply graded, gutters are essential for removing roof run-off from your home. If properly installed, they keep crawl spaces and basements dry, protect siding from rot and stains, and preserve topsoil. They also shield doors & windows from damage and water infiltration. But the big question is: which material should you choose for your home’s gutters?

Gutters and downspouts (the vertical sections that route runoff to the ground) are made of vinyl, aluminum, stainless steel, and galvanized steel. Wood or copper gutters are also options, but they are rare and mainly used for restoration work.

Stainless steel gutters are rust-free and strong and maintain their beautiful sheen for years. However, like other custom, high-end materials, they are expensive. For this reason, vinyl, aluminum or galvanized steel gutters are the prevailing varieties.

Aluminum and steel gutters are the most popular among homeowners, while the most economical and affordable are galvanized steel. Steel can stand up well to fallen branches and ladders better than aluminum, but even thick galvanized steel will eventually rust. Aluminum gutters will never rust, and they are relatively inexpensive, which is why they have the edge in popularity.

Vinyl gutters, in addition to being impervious to rot and rust, are easy to cut to size and therefore easier to install.

Gutters are either sectional or seamless. Seamless gutters, made of galvanized steel, copper or aluminum, are extruded to customized lengths on site. This requires the use of a special machine, so if you decide to go seamless, installation must be done by a professional contracting company.
