New air conditioners and furnaces and extra insulation in ceilings and walls are good ways to improve energy efficiency. When it comes to window replacement, homeowners should choose wisely. In terms of energy efficiency, there’s no better choice than vinyl. However, before buying, ask yourself the following questions:
Are the Window Frames Insulated? Vinyl window frames made with unplasticized polyvinyl chloride (uPVC) are a lot more energy efficient than aluminum, multi-chambered hollow vinyl, and composite windows. Be sure to check on the R-Factor of the frames and the glass. The insulation value is greater as the R-Factor goes up. See this diagram:
How are the Corners Connected? This is a very important window replacement consideration. If they are fusion welded, the windows won’t ever leak. But if the corners are chemically welded, mechanically fastened or screwed, they could start leaking over time.
Do the Windows Have Energy Efficient Glass? Today, most window replacement installations feature Low-E glass to reflect or absorb heat energy. Windows with one of the highest Low-E ratings are available from Sunrise Windows. It’s called Ultra-U Plus and it’s coated with 8 layers of heat-reflective shields – as seen here:
Are the Windows Energy Star Approved in North Carolina? Products for window replacement are tested and rated by the National Fenestration Council (NFRC) which requires windows to meet with certain criteria before they can be Energy Star Approved. The NFRC rates products for 3 geographical regions in the US, so some windows may not be Energy Star Approved in NC. However, products from Sunrise Windows are Energy Star Approved across the entire country.
