Windows are our portals to the outside world. They bring in fresh air and light and allow us to watch the passing parade of life. However, they also let in UV rays and moisture. That’s why window replacement might be necessary. The following factors can help you decide whether your windows just need a little TLC or whether they need replacing:
AGE
This is a major deciding factor in window replacement. If your windows are old and inefficient, you may as well put up a piece of cardboard. Windows manufactured in the 1960s are nowhere near as efficient as those made today. Remember, efficiency is the key in recouping what you spend on window replacement through energy savings. Older windows tend to have little or no insulation value.
MAINTENANCE
Not all old windows need replacing. Have an experienced contractor inspect them and ask if there are any other alternatives to replacement. Often, a quick inspection by a professional will determine that maintenance can provide the solution. For example, if the windows are leaking, drafty, fogging over, or mildew or mold is forming on the inside or outside, these issues may be solved by a bit of repair work and correct maintenance.
STYLE AND MATERIALS
Window styles are varied and numerous. Whether they are double hung, casement, hoppers, jalousies, awning windows or fixed picture windows, the life expectancy of each style can differ significantly.
Material also plays a role in determining whether window replacement is necessary. Wood windows, for example, have a lower life expectancy than aluminum or vinyl.
