A casement window is one of the easiest windows to open and close because it works like a door.
Before sash windows were invented, casement was the most widely used
window installation. Today, it is used mainly in the construction of new high-end homes.
The “green” movement is the main reason for the revival of casement window installation. They have varying operating styles and large openings to increase energy efficiency and provide better ventilation. They also seal tightly to give good protection against the outdoor elements, while reducing heat gain or loss.
When casement
windows are incorporated into the design of new homes to maximize energy efficiency, they beat many other types of window installation hands down. Placed on opposite walls with opposing swings, you get maximum air flow through a room, which creates a reduced demand for energy-guzzling heating and cooling units.
Casement windows come in a range of versatile styles and will, therefore, enhance any type of architectural design. Small top hung or bottom hung casements are perfect for out-of-the-way spaces that require ventilation and natural light – spaces such as storage closets, pantries, laundry rooms and bathrooms.
But that’s not to say that you always need to think small when considering casement window installation and design. Many charming bay windows feature casement partitions with sidelights. And, when installed in the southern-facing side of a home, big casements act as effective collectors of precious solar rays to keep the home warm during the cold winter months.
