Vinyl windows and frames made of unplasticized polyvinyl chloride (uPVC) extrusions and insulated with a polyurethane base are much more energy-efficient than wood, aluminum, composite or multi-chambered hollow vinyl windows. Therefore, the first important question to ask before buying is: What is the R-Factor of both the frames and the window glass? Remember, the higher the R-Factor, the higher the insulating value.
Now, here are the other 3 important questions:
What about Energy-Efficient Window Glass that Helps Reduce the Transfer of Cold and Heat?
The best windows are those with a Low-E (low-emissivity) coating – some have two or more layers of it. One of the highest performing types of Low-E window glass is made by Sunrise – it’s called Ultra-U+Plus – and it has 8 layers of reflective shields.
How are the Corners Joined?
Corners that are fusion-welded will never leak. Neither air nor water is able to penetrate through the frames. On the other hand, corners that are chemically welded, mechanically fastened, or screwed together can start to leak over time.
Are the Windows Energy Star Approved in My Area?
Any windows tested and rated by the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) must meet certain standards before being rated energy-efficient. Only top performing windows will carry the Energy Star approval, giving consumers the assurance that they have the ability to not only save energy, but also utility costs. The US Department of Energy rates products for 3 different geographical regions in the country, so some types of window glass may not be Energy Star approved in every region. The only windows that are Energy Star approved in all parts of America are those made by Sunrise.
