Window Replacement: Choosing the Right Windows for Your House

The windows on your house are among the most important of features, and plenty of consideration should be afforded when considering window replacement. Factors such as durability, insulation, maintenance, and aesthetics are key.

The durability of the window comes largely from the material out of which the window frame is constructed.  Available materials include aluminum, vinyl, wood, and fiberglass, with fiberglass usually offering the highest insulation and low maintenance requirements.

How well your new windows will insulate (gauged by a measurement called the “U-factor”) your house is another key factor for window replacement. Ability to insulate, like durability, varies depending on the window material. While there is no end to the winter insulation kits found both in stores and online (not to mention home-spun tricks, found less in stores but still quite often online), a carefully selected, quality window can save you time, money, and effort.

Speaking of effort, maintenance plays an important role in window replacement: how to maintain, as well as how often. A good window can last a lifetime when properly maintained, and different types of windows demand different maintenance. Wooden windows often require more maintenance than other options, for example, but may be more aesthetically pleasing to some people.

Aesthetics are not to be down-played when considering window replacement. Your windows are one of the dominant features of your house, both inside and out, and can purvey the sense of style a home-owner wishes to present. Don't think that insulation and durability are the only factors that can affect your pocketbook. A house that is visually appealing can increase in home value. It's not all about showing off!
